REVIEW OF CANON
In canon, Kavinsky demonstrates a belligerent indifference to consent. Throughout the book, the Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater, he uses physical contact to bully a character named Ronan, engaging in activities such as: rubbing Ronan’s head in a restaurant, tapping a pen on Ronan’s teeth inside a car, and punching Ronan in the side of the head for doing poorly at magic lessons. Furthermore, when Ronan takes a sleeping pill and lays down, unable to move, Kavinsky runs a finger down his back despite that Ronan has never indicated interest in this type of contact. Outside of his interactions with Ronan, he also: creates a copy of a human being with a personality potentially modified to be very obedient (Prokopenko, who is I quote, “happy to oblige” when yelled at to do menial tasks, like create Molotov cocktails), as well as screaming at an incapacitated/drugged girl to do things for him, calling her a “bitch,” violently striking a car she’s inside of. In general, he orders people around instead of asking. He also takes Ronan’s phone while Ronan is presumably semi-conscious and uses it to photograph a penis (his own or Ronan’s) and send the unsolicited photo to another character, Gansey. He is also reputedly responsible for at least one overdose by drugs (“Three years before, a junior from a school three counties over had overdosed on something the hospital hadn’t seen before. It wasn’t the overdose that impressed people, though. It was that fifteen-year-old Kavinsky was already capable of pulling in kids from forty-five minutes away.), and implied to be responsible for the death of the original Prokopenko. Later, Kavinsky then claims to have mixed tranquilizing pills into his mother’s smoothies when she screams at him with the intent of rendering her unconscious, and goads Ronan to make (inferred) incest jokes about it. Toward the end of the book, he personally kidnaps Ronan’s younger brother by concussing him and taking him hostage for some days. His verbal (i.e., spoken and via text) abuse and insults include: “Dickweasel,” “bitch,” “shitstack,” “ballsack,” “faggot,” and “cunt.” One assumes people did not consent to any of these activities.
On the night he plans (and succeeds) to kill himself, Ronan confronts Kavinsky in a dream-world. Note, it’s established in canon that “dream thieves” can either take items from the dream-world into the real world with the consent of the dream-world or without it. Ronan observes that he has not gotten away with stealthily stealing objects from dreams that night. His response is: ‘“Some nights,” Kavinsky said, all teeth, “you just take it. Consent is overrated.”’ Although this is in the context of dream theft, there are clearly implications for the rest of Kavinsky’s conduct. The reader is limited to third person accounts (rumors, his observed actions and dialogue) of Kavinsky’s actual beliefs and psychological mechanics. So here are my interpretations:
For most of the book, Kavinsky primarily cares only about his own desires and wellbeing. He is characterized by an enormous sense of entitlement: he thinks that his unique magic means he should be able to use it to do whatever he wants; that one instance of helping another person (Ronan) means he should have whatever he wants from them; that power (money, aggression, magic) automatically confers influence. He uses his powers to create himself a servant who he uses for mundane purposes. He does not commit penetrative nonconsensual intercourse, but he touches (sexually but also with non-sexual violence) other characters, makes physically threatening gestures, sends unsolicited sexual photos. He convinces people to take dangerous designer drugs without providing a comprehensive description of their effects and side-effects, and he verbally abuses other people (sexually, but also in ways that are sexist and probably off-screen also racist, fat-shaming, classist, and otherwise cruel). He does most of this because it entertains him; he is frequently complaining about being “bored.” Where Ronan is concerned, he also engages in invasive, non-consensual behaviors (e.g., touching, punching, saying horrible things) because he is romantically and sexually interested in the other boy. Emotionally, he does not empathize with the people that he causes to suffer; indeed, he does not seem to experience much suffering himself. Even when Ronan chooses to reject him in spite of what Kavinsky regards as great help rendered, Kavinsky’s face merely goes “blank” and he makes a showy threat (“I will burn you down”). At all other times, he laughs, smiles, and presents as enjoying himself, even when he sustains what appears to be painful “dream injury” (bloody scratches). Later on, he primarily cares only about his selfish desire to kill himself, specifically in a spectacle that causes others immense anxiety and distress. He enacts this desire effectively.
CURRENT STATE
At this point in Eudio, Kavinsky is behaving better, in terms of respecting the consent of others. In terms of thoughts and beliefs, he has experienced minimal change. His motivation to respect consent is that: his canon point is approximately 1 second before he dies, effectively making the final chapter of The Dream Thieves a failed suicide attempt. The suicide attempt was a transformative event: he has decided that he no longer wants to die (for the time-being!). He currently knows that, if he violates consent and is reported to the Eudio representatives, he will be sent home and probably die. Kavinsky is effectively trying to avoid the death penalty. It’s good motivation to abide by consent.
Emotionally, the persistent threat of suicide actually causes him real anxiety, anger, and sadness, which is quite rare for him (he hasn’t really thought about using his final 1 second to save himself just yet). Due to therapy, he is actually becoming more cognizant of these emotions. Formerly, he was one of those guys who, when asked, “How do you feel?” he would answer with a thought, such as, “I feel like the world is full of motherfucking assholes,” as opposed to “I’m angry,” combined with his blank expression. As part of cognitive-behavioral therapy for his mood disorder (Not Otherwise Specified, or NOS) and some personality disorder characteristics, he is gradually being challenged more and more often about his problematic ideas. His therapist is pointing out the connection between his behavioral violations of consent, to consequences (e.g., rejection), and the emotional states and thoughts and beliefs that follow.
Notably, he’s begun to make some progress with learning empathy. Mostly, this has contributed to his ability to read subtler signs of people’s emotions, which he then uses to try to hurt them (yikes). However, he has also begun to meet others who experience clear/disclose self-loathing, aggression (i.e., violent, but non-sexual), heartbreak, death (we have a lot of dead characters), and self-destructive/suicide behaviors. Thanks to his narcissism, he has begun to identify slightly with these individuals. He primarily sees them only as tiny, less meaningful versions of his own problems because he’s still a giant asshole, but it’s legitimately the beginnings of empathy and understanding.
It may also be relevant to note that I’ve been writing that the origins of his sexually aggressive behavior were based on some childhood abuse. This is based partly on the author’s notes that: “Kavinsky is a scary, terrible predator,” “Kavinsky has a very logical backstory that leads him to this place,” “Kavinsky chooses to be led to this place.” I interpreted that to mean that his sexually inappropriate behavior (not only verbally but physically) and attitude toward consent was to some extent learned, but it is extremely important to me that this does not exculpate him. It inculpates him. Etiology is not an excuse. Instead of turning his personal experiences into reasons to connect with other teenagers who have suffered similarly, he uses it as an excuse to exploit and hurt them. The fact that he is in formal treatment and in the process of redemption is intended to indicate that he needs to change, not that he is most excellent the way he is.
MOTIVATION TO CHANGE
Although he laughs and screams excitedly and is actually throwing a 4th of July party as he commits suicide in canon, there is some indication that Kavinsky did not kill himself because he was happy and comfortable with his life choices. There are definitely people who commit suicide as a “positive” goal orientation (e.g., suicide bombers). He was certainly screaming some fatalistic statements in a very excited way. However, in absence of definitive “point of view” narratives of Kavinsky’s final suicide experience, I feel he was probably in distress, potentially related to Ronan’s rejection of him.
The only real evidence of this is that he creates a dream monster that Ronan makes the following observations about: “He could feel how it hated him. How it hated Kavinsky, too. How it hated the world. It was so hungry.” Note, prior to this event, Ronan also created monsters that were trying to kill Ronan himself; however, the monsters abruptly stopped trying to kill him as soon as Ronan realized that he no longer hated himself (‘“It’s only you,” whispered Orphan Girl. She was holding [Ronan’s] hand, crouched down next to him. “Why do you hate you?”’ ‘[...]“I don’t,” [Ronan] said.’). Thus, it may be inferred that Kavinsky kills himself at least partly because he hates himself (in addition to the rest of the world).
Hating oneself and suicidal distress may not seem like the best place to start in terms of personal change. However, according to many psychotherapy modalities, “subjective distress” tends to be excellent motivation for therapy, which is why persons suffering from depression and anxiety tend to have a good prognosis. Fear of death, fear of suicide, self-hate (e.g., negative self-ideation-- “hate” actually isn’t really regarded as an emotion, and is more of a thought) may be seen as subjective distress. If this sounds tremendously selfish, that’s because it is. In my understanding (incidentally also Stiefvater’s), suicidal people must ultimately save themselves-- Kavinsky must save himself. It would be charming if he did it for love of others, and maybe a bit romantic if he were rescued by somebody else, but this is both unrealistic (in my opinion) and unfair. This egocentric, self-centered start to his motivation is necessary and appropriate.
However, this is not to say that his course is simple! Plenty of Kavinsky’s behaviors were self-rewarding (ego syntonic). His disgusting, consent-violating behaviors brought him popularity and a sense of control and power. Furthermore, the connection between “violating the consent of others” and “hating himself” is (arguably) not as straightforward as the symptomology of many people with mood disorders. He is an obstinate, self-ignorant, and rather emotionally impaired young man, whose sense of entitlement is coupled with a rampant tendency to evade personal responsibility and redirect blame outward. It will take his therapist a long time to help him identify his problems, and repeatedly challenge his problematic tendencies until he begins to internalize some changes!
FUTURE POSSIBILITIES
As a player, I have noticed that some characters (and players) have an impulse to help Kavinsky with his problems. This is, even though he treats them quite badly (i.e., making vulgar remarks or sexual harrassment, insults that include racism, sexism, etc.) under guise of making jokes. No one has thus far indicated “non-consent” to being treated in such a manner, which he definitely exploits despite knowing that he’s causing distress. Although this is problematic and troubling to observe, the fact is, I intend for Kavinsky to have to save himself. The temporary consequence of this edict is that he will continue to treat people badly, until he arrives at his own conclusions about the changes that need to be made. That’s not to say that other people aren’t influencing him! Just that the main push has to come from himself, rather than well-meaning people with eloquent speeches and hero complexes, and he has yet to come to that point. (See: dragon plot)
Other processes besides on-screen RP include therapy off-screen! As Eudio is somewhat of an idealized society, I plan for Kavinsky to receive highly effective treatment with some of the following components: empathy training, covert sensitization, cognitive restructuring, behavioral targeting of moral injury. I won’t go into an in-depth explanation here. However, all of these treatments are regarded as evidence-based (i.e., having a reasonable amount of empirical research supporting them). They have been used for: depressive persons, domestic abuse, addictions, and sex offenders, among other populations that sometimes struggle with entitlement, compulsive behaviors, consent, and harm-causing to others. Recidivism is definitely a problem with all of these issues, but it’s far from 100%, and again-- I’m assuming Eudio and its healthcare services are perfect.
If I had to describe the narrative arc and final results with regard to consent, it would probably go something along the following. He starts out not interested in consent as a problem at all, selfishly concerned with only saving his own life, because death bothers him. Over time, he becomes more in touch with his emotions and finds that “bothers him” means “is terrifying and sad.” As he makes those connections and has his ideas challenged, he will develop a stronger sense of empathy and reduce his sense of entitlement. He will begin to experience guilt and remorse, which will snowball into problematic levels of shame and anger. He is likely to continue to be an asshole in some ways throughout this time, continuing to use relational aggression to refocus himself on the sins committed by others instead of facing his own. Eventually, however, he will come to terms with his sense of responsibility and begin to engage in redemptive acts, that will allow him to develop more flexible thoughts about himself, the world, and others.
At the end of the day, he’s probably still going to be an asshole. In the best case scenario, five years from now, he is probably confrontational and doesn’t mind seeing people cry or squirm if he thinks he is in the right. However, he can absolutely learn to ask for permission and evaluate the parameters of consent more effectively, and reduce his sexually violent and non-sexually violent behaviors to zero times per day/week/etc. He can probably also look back on his life and acknowledge he was a dick.
COMPETING HEADCANONS
As so much headcanon is involved in this interpretation, I think it’s worth noting that I’m aware there are other perspectives on Kavinsky out there. There is some implication that he is happy to commit suicide, that he might be a serial rapist (victimizing dream-Prokopenko and others), that he might have had incestuous sex with his mother, or used drugs and firearms to murder multiple people at some time in his life (and somehow evaded arrest). Again, he is described strictly in third person, with a lot of rumors, self-statements that might be lies or exaggerations, gross texts, and confrontational behaviors. I have tried to be as comprehensive as possible about reviewing canon above, but please let me know if you have further concerns about my having missed anything!
OTHER MATERIALS
Thanks to my profession, I have access to various anecdotes and other research materials that provide some support for the therapy modalities and potential outcomes. I have met and provided consultation for individuals who engaged in abductions, death threats, attempted murder, drug use, incest, felonious sex offense, suicide attempt, physical assaults (including domestic violence), verbal abuse, brain damage, etc., before, as well as the survivors and family members thereof. Although I cannot disclose confidential details about these experiences, I would be happy to provide as many resources and citations as the mod team (or other inquirers) need.
FINAL NOTE
I have no interest in RPing a corpse or a rapist in Eudio.
