[there is some terrible irony in this: that kavinsky gave up the memory of the day ronan did exactly that. drove out into the boonies to track him down, where he'd been dreaming john murphy's botched zombie clone. taken him home to the meadows, so he could say in murphy's old room.

these days, he only knows -- intellectually -- that it must have happened. the text messages are there. and he remembers losing the room, obviously.

but here he only smiles, because of course he does. ditches his empty cup on the cushions.] You trying to give me back already? [he asks.] It's been like a fucking month. You're like those dicks who buy chicks and baby bunnies for Easter. Are you more of a dog person or a cat person?

[kavinsky's face crinkles up with laughter. this is an entertaining fantasy scenario. he who was once the misshapen thing found in the alleyway, and no one could figure out if he was bald from disease or born that way, promoted to proper housemate.

then he reaches over to extricate josh's glass from his nubs. by now, it's empty. he's being his best self right now, which means not mentioning what he's heard happens to greyhounds once they age out of the track. yikes. a dark fate for sweet, goal-oriented creatures.]

How about Rahne. Is that rude? [he recalls she was a werewolf.] Do it anyway. [his best self is still not that good.]

You ever see that cartoon? With, like, the dog that was half-wolf and half-husky but wanted to be a sled dog so people'd love him? [ balto his name was balto ] That's Rahne. And dude, it's so hard not to love her. Not even - like, not love love, but you meet her and you're just instantly like I gotta protect this girl, even though she could take your arm off with her teeth and doesn't need you to. And she's Scottish, with like red hair and green eyes, so like, a red wolf-dog? Yeah. That.

[ he still misses her now and again. sometimes. when he isn't actively trying to forget the last time he'd seen her. they had a bond from the second they'd met, two outsiders hating parts of themselves they'd come to find they couldn't live without. ]

there seems to be very little tea to be spilled in this conversation. it's fine. looking after people on drugs is rarely thrilling sport, if you're trying to be responsible about it. it might be the triple shot liquor, but he finds that he doesn't mind.]

[kavinsky sits up, stretches his arms above his head suddenly. his vertebrates pop, low but audible. his shoulders drop back into a comfortable balance the next moment. he reaches over to take josh's glass, which is mostly just ice now. he scoots his butt close and peers down into his golden face.]

So he is the type you pictured Dave with, or not? Sounds like the spirit is there, but the rest ain't? Guess the pom sounds like a little dog who doesn't know he's little.

Um... So, David dated exactly one girl in highschool, and Noriko kind of - if she were a dog she'd be a pitbull. If she cares about you she'd do anything for you, but you cannot fuck with her or tell her what to do. She'll kick your ass, she'll tell you exactly what she thinks of you, and she'll do it loudly. She's a badass and, wow, I miss her? But I didn't know if they were gonna kill each other or hook up like, up until they started making out during a camping trip.

Damian's more... stable. I think he's a better fit. I'd just never have seen it coming.

[josh is apparently not so high on drugs that he is completely divorced from reality. that's probably good. kavinsky's grin is cartoonishly, perhaps terrifyingly huge.]

That's riiiight.

[and with that, kavinsky attacks!

but not with serial killer knives or homophobic comments. instead, he leans over and squishes josh's waist through the plushy fabric of the blanket, and squeezes him, rolling the fluffy bundle of his body as if he is, indeed, a puppy.]

[ and he's laughing.

seriously laughing, because a) that feels fucking amazing, this blanket is amazing? he wants ten. and b ) what the actual fuck. he's reduced to helpless giggling, baby kicking his feet a little as he struggles with the nubbins of his hands to get free and away. ]

[blanket burritos make people tiny, and in a world of tiny people, joseph kavinsky feels more powerful!! a perception and experience that is, for once, not totally gross of him.

he stops trying to pry josh's golden love handles after a few minutes, settles instead for squeezing him in a two-man dogpile of a bearhug, whilst also low-key chomping his head -- hair? -- and roaring in his ear. he only manages to bellow for about a minute before he, too, dissolves into laughter.

joseph kavinsky sounds like a maniac when he laughs, though. a jackal sending peals across the savannah, heralding death and disease and and buoyant stench. maniacal car wrecks and deranged magic. that's what that laugh means.

but josh is on drugs, so he might be forgiven for missing that.]

[ the kid hails from comic books, where villainous laughs are just par the course. every anti-hero has one, every villain chortles, and every hero has a break where that bubbles out. the nature of that laugh barely registers,

he's not going to complain about being clung to. he even leans into it, unable to really do much hugging back due to the blanket entrapping his limbs, but he's absolutely delighted with the attention. physical affection, physical contact, of any kind is good for him. and, you know, anyone who happens to be touching him. enjoy that pleasant biokinetic tingle any time skin happens to brush skin.

the laughter dies down and he lets out a contented sigh. ]

[that's while i walk, not while we walk. because kavinsky is then turning his back toward the healer boy, sticking his arms out sideways, making his intention to piggyback carry his friend quite clear.]

[ terrible joke. absolutely dreadful. but he's getting the picture, laughing again as he climbs onto kavinsky's back, wrapping blanketed arms loosely around his neck. ]
